Asscher Cut Diamonds

asscher cut diamonds

Asscher Cut Diamonds- are an eight-sided step cut diamond with a square outline. Asscher Cut diamonds are often also called Square Emerald Cut diamonds. The Asscher Cut was patented in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of Holland. Asscher Cut diamonds were the forerunner of today's Emerald Cut diamonds.

The Asscher Cut most likely evolved in the late 1800's. The Asscher Diamond Company began in 1854 in Amsterdam. The Asscher family soon became entrusted with cutting some of the most difficult shapes and sizes. King Edward VII of England commissioned the Asscher Diamond Company to cut the Cullinan, at 3,105 carats it is the world's largest rough diamond ever found. Since that time the name of the company was changed to the Royal Asscher Company.

An Asscher Cut diamond is not a brilliant cutting style, it is instead a step cut style which means that it has long narrow facets. With a brilliant cutting style there are many small irregular shaped facets on a curved surface around the diamond.

As with Emerald Cut diamonds, well-cut Asscher Cut diamonds can be very elegant and draw a lot of attention.

asscher cut diamonds Because Asscher Cut diamonds are supposed to be square, the length to width ratio should be between 1.00 and 1.05. Asscher Cut diamonds should be proportioned the same as Emerald Cut diamonds, between 60 to 75% for the table and 53 to 70% for the total depth.

- Important Take Away Points -
Asscher Cut Diamonds

#1- Because of this "step cut" cutting style of facets, Asscher Cut diamonds which have a low Clarity or low Color could be vary obvious. A well-cut Round Brilliant Cut diamond that is really lively, or "blingy", the inclusions along with the body color can be masked to an certain extent... this is not as possible with a step style cut like Asscher Cut diamonds.

A slightly higher Clarity and Color will be a good idea.... probably no lower than an "SI1" or lower than a "G". Of course, if you find an Asscher Cut diamond in a jewelry store and it has lower Clarity or Color grades than these parameters but it still looks nice, then you can realize a savings.... but shopping online you'll need to stick with stricter higher limits of Clarity and Color for Asscher Cut diamonds.

#2- With Asscher Cut diamonds the most critical aspect will be the angles that the pavilion facets will be set to... the light should roll across the pavilion in a smooth even fashion. The diamond cutter will really have to know what they are doing in order to make Asscher Cut diamonds look alive and not look like a lifeless piece of glass that you can read through.

#3- In late 2006, the American Gem Society Laboratories (ASGL) began issuing Diamond Quality Documents for Asscher Cut diamonds. Why is that important? It is because these grading reports include an AGSL Cut grade.

The AGSL's Cut grade is determined by actually measuring the light performance of the diamond. This definitely helps when shopping for Asscher Cut diamonds because you will be able to compare and contrast diamonds in order to find the diamond with the best Cut..... which we all know is the most important of the 4Cs!
